Organ Festival Holland
Organ Festival Holland 2019
From June 21 to June 28, 2019, the Organ Festival Holland takes up residence in various churches in Alkmaar, but mainly in the Grote Kerk. The festival still lies far in the future , but looking forward to something beautiful and exciting is always enjoyable. And it is certain that beautiful and exciting things will happen during this festival. To get you slowly into the mood, we will present to you all kinds of facts about the instruments, the musicians, the people behind the scenes and of course the music that will be played, in the run-up to the festival.
The main event of the festival is of course the International Schnitger Organ Competition, which will be held for the thirteenth time. The design of the competition is a familiar one: preselection, two preliminary rounds and the final. Different this time is the maximum of ten players participating in the two preliminary rounds. In the meantime we are working on a diverse and attractive program of requirements the applicants have to work with. Of course we hope that they will keep the jury and audience on the edge of their seats.
For those who do not like competitions, but would like to do masterclasses during the festival, the International Organ Academy is a wonderful alternative. The added value of the academy is that the teachers Krzysztof Urbaniak, Wolfgang Zerer, Martin Böcker, Bernard Foccroulle and Bas de Vroome not only judge but also inform, advise and instruct. And a trip to the instructive and challenging Garrels organ in Purmerend is an added bonus. Obviously, the academy will encompass interesting repertoire.
The new team of the Festival
Organizing a festival like the Organ Festival Holland is an exciting activity, which always asks a lot of the volunteers. That is why it is a good thing that once in while the team of volunteers is refreshed. Adri Steenhoek, Hans Tijsen, Dietrik Emmens and Erica Hoorn have made room for new forces. Richard de Jager, Bert Huibers and Jan Albert Jong will join forces with the others - Ruud van Bokhorst, Ton Veltkamp, Pieter van Dijk, Frank van Wijk, Daniël van Horssen, Hans Steketee, Ross Luescher and Dirk van Egmond for the next edition: Organ Festival Holland 2019 and the ´Better Schnitger´.
Concerts in 2018
You do not have to wait until the festival next year to hear beautiful organ music . In the coming weeks there will be many concerts in the Alkmaar churches. The Organ Festival Holland also organizes two special events this season: in the Lutheran Church on 19 August and in the Grote Kerk on 19 October.
Italian musicians in the Lutheran Church
In the middle of the mountains and forests of Trent lies the town of Smarano. With the eternal snow of the Italian Alps in the distance, this idyllic spot seems to be untouched by the noisy world around it. Perhaps that is why the Smarano Organ Academy - which started here in 1993 - has acquired international fame: you can concentrate, improve and grow in peace in a truly beautiful environment, led by top musicians. Pieter van Dijk is also a teacher at this academy and this year he invites the academy participants to get acquainted with the Alkmaar organs.
Massimiliano Guido and Edoardo Bellotti, both core members of the academy, will visit Alkmaar with their students from 19 to 21 August, and they will give a concert in the Lutheran Church on Sunday 19 August at 4.00 pm. They will perform Southern European works and will also improvise. The improvisation fits well within the Smarano academy’s theme: the Fantazie. From the mountains to the flat polder landscape: also wondering what musical fantasies this will produce?
Nosferatu, the movie
From Fantasy to gruesome Reality? In 'Nosferatu' the first real filming of Bram Stoker’s story of Dracula they merge. This film, accompanied by an improvisation by Franz Danksagmüller, was one of the highlights of the Organ Festival Holland 2017 edition. Now, once again, you will get the chance to experience this silent German horror film by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau from 1922 on a big screen and enhanced by blood-curdling organmusic from Franz Danksagmüller. The Filmhuis Alkmaar, in collaboration with the Organ Festival Holland, will stage this production in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar on Friday 19 October at 8.30 pm. Would you like to see, hear and know more about Franz Danksagmüller? Watch our FILM CHANNEL or visit Franz Danksagmüller’s website.
